Services for Those Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

The UConn Health Center makes auxiliary aids and services available to our patients or their companions who are deaf or hard of hearing.

  • Certified American Sign Language interpreters are available around the clock seven days a week. Staff interpreters are available on-site Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After hours, on weekends and holidays, interpreters are provided through the Commission for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired or through Family Services Woodfield. Please indicate your request for an interpreter when you initially call to make your appointment. To make an appointment, please call UConnLink at 800-535-6232 or 860-679-7692 or through our TTD number: 860-679-2242.
  • TTD machines are permanently installed at all public telephones throughout the Health Center.
  • Visual fire and emergency alarms are in all public restrooms.
  • All televisions in patient rooms and waiting areas are closed captioned.
  • Signs with information about the availability of interpreters and auxiliary aids are posted throughout the Health Center.
  • Cases containing TTD machines, amplified phones, one-to-one amplified devices and erasable boards and markers are available to all deaf and hard of hearing patients who are admitted to the hospital.
