Pulmonary Medicine
All air-breathing vertebrate animals have lungs in order to breathe.
Pulmonary medicine deals with the causes, diagnosis, prevention and
treatment of diseases and disorders that affect the lungs. Specialists
in pulmonary medicine provide diagnostic, management and critical care
services for a broad range of pulmonary diseases, including
sleep-related breathing problems, pulmonary infections and lung
disorders caused by other disease, as well as problems associated with
blood vessels in the lungs.
Some of the conditions our physicians diagnose and treat include
bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia, sleep apnea,
as well as the more unusual disorders such as sarcoidosis, a slow
chronic disease in which normal tissue is replaced by granules of
epithelium and lymphoid cells. Lung problems associated with
hypersensitivity or occupation, acute and chronic lung diseases, and
pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary vascular diseases, are also part of
the pulmonary team’s expertise.
Our pulmonary specialists stress patient education and patient
involvement for success in preventing, managing, and treating pulmonary
problems.
