Peter C. Albertsen, M.D.
Professor of Surgery
Division Chief and Program Director Dr. Albertsen received his B.A. from Princeton University in 1974 and his M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1978. After two years of surgical training at Harvard’s Deaconess Hospital in Boston he completed his residency training in urology at the Johns Hopkins University Brady Urological Institute in 1984. He subsequently received an M.S. in medical
administration and preventative medicine from University of Wisconsin in 1990. Board certified in urology since 1986, he has re-certified in 1994 and 2004. Dr. Albertsen has obtained an international reputation for his work on prostate cancer and is the author of numerous publications. He is on the editorial board of several journals and frequently reviews manuscripts for the major
urological journals. Furthermore, he holds the prestigious honor of being a trustee of the American Board of Urology as well as a member of the Residency Review Committee of ACGME for Urology. He is a member of the American Urological Association, American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons and the Society of Urologic Oncology amongst others. Dr. Albertsen practices general urology with
a focus on prostate and urologic cancers. |

Brendan Fox, M.D.
Clinical Professor of Surgery
Dr. Fox received his undergraduate
education at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and his M.D.
was received from Tufts University in 1955. Dr. Fox pursued a residency
in internal medicine at Boston City and St. Francis Hospitals prior to
completing his surgical and urologic training at Yale University, Boston
VA Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in 1964. He has been
board certified in urology since 1967. He served on staff at St. Francis
Hospital since 1964 and is the president of the American Urological
Association for the academic year beginning in 2004. |

Carl K. Gjertson, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Surgery
Dr. Gjertson received his B.A. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry
from Yale University in 1993 and his M.D. from the College of Physicians
& Surgeons of Columbia University in 2001. He completed his surgical
training at the Squire Urological Clinic of Columbia University Medical
Center in 2006. He subsequently pursued fellowship training in
laparoscopic/robotic surgery and endourology at Indiana University
School of Medicine from 2006-07. Dr. Gjertson is a member of the
American Urological Association, Endourological Society, Gold Humanism
Honor Society, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He is the author of
numerous publications and book chapters. Dr. Gjertson practices general
urology with a focus on laparoscopy, robotics, and minimally invasive
techniques for the management of urologic disease.

Phillip P. Smith, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Surgery
An Ohio native, Dr. Smith graduated with a B.A. in chemistry from Kenyon
College in 1980 and his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 1984.
He subsequently completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at
the University of Cincinnati. He obtained his board-certification in OB/GYN
in 1990, and re-certified in 2000. Following several years of private
practice, he returned to academia to pursue his interests in pelvic
floor dysfunction, serving three years of fellowship training in voiding
dysfunction and female urology, with Rodney Appell, M.D., in the Scott
Department of Urology at Baylor College of Medicine. He is the author of
several papers and book chapters on lower urinary tract physiology and
dysfunction. His research interests include genitourinary biomechanics,
lower urinary tract neurophysiology, and urodynamics. Dr. Smith’s
practice will focus on urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunctions in
men and women, and pelvic organ prolapse in women.

John A. Taylor, III, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Surgery
Dr. Taylor received his B.A. in biology from Lafayette College in
1990 and his M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians &
Surgeons in 1994. He completed his surgical training at the Squire
Urological Clinic of Columbia University’s Presbyterian Medical Center
in 2000. A commissioned officer in the United States Navy (LCDR) since
1990, he served on active duty as a staff urologist at Walter Reed Army
Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed
Services University of Health Science from 2000-03. While at Walter Reed
he was an active investigator in the Department of Defense’s Center for
Prostate Disease Research. Dr. Taylor has been board certified in
urology since 2002. He is a member of the American Urological
Association (AUA) and the American College of Surgeons. He has authored
many publications as well as contributed to book chapters. He is the
recipient of the Dennis W. Jahnigen Scholars award administered by the
American Geriatrics Society and the AUA’s post residency research award
for his work in aging and bladder cancer. Dr. Taylor has extensive
training in urologic cancer surgery and urinary tract reconstruction.
Dr. Taylor practices general urology with a focus on the treatment of
urologic cancers, complex urinary tract reconstruction and urethral
stricture disease.

Stanton Honig, M.D.
Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery
Dr. Honig received his B.S. in biology from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1982 and his M.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1986. His residency training in surgery and urology was completed at Boston University School of Medicine in 1992. He subsequently pursued fellowship training in male reproductive medicine and surgery at Baylor College of
Medicine from 1992-93. He is board certified in urology since 1995. He is a member of the American Urological Association, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction amongst others. Dr. Honig has authored many publications and book chapters in this area of urology. He sees patients once a week at the Health Center with focus on male
infertility and sexual function. |
