Influenza Isolation Reference

Room Requirements:

  • Private room, no need for reverse isolation

Precautions:

  • Airborne and contact precautions

Personal Protective Gear (Staff):

  • If fit tested: N95 mask

  • If not fit tested: PAPR required

  • Transport should be called to bring PAPR cart to unit

Notifications Required:

  • Supervisor
  • Manager
  • Infection Control at ext. 4376 (leave message if night shift admission)

Documentation Requirements:

  • Flowsheet: Documentation of infection and date/time of initiation of isolation
  • Care Plan: In the areas of patient teaching, respiratory, and infection
  • POE: Under "patient factors"

Patient-oriented Infection Control:

  • Must wear yellow surgical masks when being transported out of room
  • Perform good hand hygiene (soap/water, waterless hand sanitizer)
  • Educate on cough etiquette
  • Tissue should be available for coughing/sneezing
  • The duration of isolation for patients with an influenza-like illness: Isolation precautions for patients who have influenza symptoms should be continued for seven days after illness onset or until 24 hours after the resolution of fever and respiratory symptoms, whichever is longer.

Visitor-oriented Infection Control:

  • No visitors under age 18.
  • Only four visitors per patient at any given time allowed.
  • Visitors should wear surgical masks and isolation gowns in the room.
  • Visitors should be reminded not to manipulate their mask to avoid contamination.
  • Visitors should practice good hand hygiene entering the room and leaving the room.
