Visiting Hours and Guidelines for Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit

Welcome to the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit, located on the first floor at John Dempsey Hospital. Our goal is to provide a safe, comfortable, therapeutic and confidential environment for our patient and visitors. We hope the following information will help acquaint you with our unit policies and routine.

Visiting Hours/Rules

  • Monday through Friday, 5 to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday, 2 to 8 p.m.
  • New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, 2 to 8 p.m.
  • All other holidays, 5 to 7 p.m.
  • Two visitors per patient
  • Children must be 12 years or older
  • Visitors must sign-in at the desk upon arrival to the unit
  • All items for the patient should be left at the desk. The nursing staff will search them. Any potentially dangerous or restricted items will be sent home or placed in a locked cabinet. Please note that the following items are not permitted:
    • Tobacco products and smoking material
    • Glass or metal cans
    • Alcohol, drugs, or non-approved medication
    • Cell phones, laptops and other electronic devices
  • Visiting is not permitted in patient’s rooms

Exceptions to our visiting policy should be prearranged with the treatment staff. We will make every effort to accommodate individual circumstances that are therapeutic to our patients’ hospitalization.

Patient Phones

  • Two payphones are available for personal calls between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.
  • PHONES WILL NOT BE IN USE DURING SCHEDULED GROUPS AND ACTIVITIES.
  • Patients may receive calls at the following numbers: 860-678-9837 or 860-678-9945.

Family Program

Family Support Group: Thursday Evenings, 5:30 to 6:15 (1st Floor Psychiatric Unit)

The Treatment Team strives to provide support, education and assistance in identifying community resources to our patients as well as to their families and significant others. A professionally led Family Support Group is offered every Thursday from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Individual family meetings may also be scheduled.
