Our Hospitalists at John Dempsey Hospital
Many of the patients cared for in UConn Health Center’s John Dempsey Hospital are cared for by our group of hospitalists. Studies have shown that hospitalists improve the quality of care delivered to hospitalized patients and that patients are more satisfied with the care that they receive in a hospital that utilizes hospitalist services.
Because hospitalists are present in the hospital throughout the day, it is more convenient for them to follow up on lab and x-ray results and communicate with patients and family members.
The hospitalist will work together with the referring primary care provider to insure the best possible care is delivered to the patient. At the time of admission the hospitalist will call and inform the primary care provider of the admission, and will collect information regarding the patient.
Upon discharge the hospitalist will call the primary care provider to give a detailed update, make a follow-up appointment and highlight any additional testing that may be required as an outpatient. The hospitalist will also provide the primary care provider with periodic updates if necessary during the patient’s stay. A detailed summary of patient’s stay will then be sent to the
primary care provider.
The primary care provider is also welcome to give the hospitalist a call at any time and always can stop in to check on the patient and/or engage in a physician to physician consult.
Our hospitalists are board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Each takes a primary responsibility in the education of the medical house staff.
